Going the “do-it-yourself” route for solar panels can be very cost effective. Although a lot of diy solar panels for home use kits can be expensive mainly because of the cost of new solar cells, you can find a lot of the materials you’ll need online or at your local hardware store and save hundreds.
Most people think that damaged solar cells don’t work… This isn’t always the case. If you can find a few solar cells with only minor damage like chips around the edges you’ll be fine; they’ll still work plus you’ll be able to buy them for much less. Continue reading →

Making solar panels from scratch is a fairly simple process… Start small at first, get your first panel built and operating and then focus on the bigger projects once you have the gist of what you’re doing.
You can find a lot of the materials you’ll need on ebay or on classified sites like craigslist. The most expensive part will probably be the solar cells so it would be in your best interest to buy them online at whatever auction site you can find them at. Continue reading →

Trying to figure out how to make wind turbines at home can get frustrating if you don’t have the right instructions and materials. In this post I’m going to show you what you need to get started in building your own wind turbine.
- Turbine Mounting – This is where your blades and motor will sit. Make sure it is strong and can withstand heavy winds. A good piece of 2×4 wood or metal pipe should be able to do the job. You want to make the mount a good length (2 feet or longer depending on the size of the entire turbine) because the tail also needs to go on there as well. Continue reading →

Wind turbines are usually put in open valleys or offshore where strong wind is plenty… Now there are plans to even use wind turbines on highways to use the wind passing cars build up; now that’s resourcefulness!
Of course this is just in the idea stages there aren’t any plans to actually build these types of turbines any time soon but it would definitely be a good idea… Continue reading →

Cool! Just today I saw some cool stuff for the iPod and iPhone… There’s a new solar panel that can power the charger, sound dock, and even an LED desk lamp.
The solar panel set up was made by ReNu and will run you around $200. The company claims that if you leave your solar panel in the sunlight for around 15-20 (a full day’s worth of sun more or less) you’ll have enough power to get 9 hours of music from your iPod. Continue reading →

A wind farm is more or less just a bunch of wind turbines in one place… You can read more about it on Wikipedia.
There can be wind farms on land and even at sea, which is pretty cool. These wind farms can generate a lot of power; there are some estimates that say wind farms can create 15% of China’s electricity by 2030… That’s only wind power, imagine that number plus solar power. Continue reading →
